波返

Re-trace

Inheriting the cyclical rhythm of Ravel’s Boléro, time no longer merely passes; it is developed within the body, time and again. Repetition is not a return to the start, but a way to discover subtle fractures in time along nearly identical trajectories.
Breath lengthens or shortens; gravity tilts; rhythm delays. These imperceptible differences, like ripples on water, disrupt time’s smoothness, allowing the body to flow. The chest opens like tides; the spine extends like waves; a relationship forms among dancers—not of uniformity, but a mutual pull where time is no longer singular. The same movement, staggered, overlapped, and offset across different bodies, generates multiple "presents" within the space. As repetition stacks, energy accumulates, and the wave rises.
Movements expand, space is stretched, and the collective rhythm propels us toward a threshold until time can no longer be contained. Then, time sinks back into the body. "Return" is not going back to the beginning, but returning to a different state of being after experience. Like waves, each retreat is already changed. Re-trace depicts not the passage of time, but how time remains within us, oscillating between coming and going.

CHUANG CHIA JIE

Chia-Jie Chuang, from Taiwan, is currently studying at the National Taiwan University of Arts. Her practice focuses on how the body responds to social structures, cultural memory, and everyday experience, reflecting the lived conditions of various groups. Her works explore themes like war trauma, urban pressure, ritual spirit, and perceptual freedom, translating personal and collective experiences into an empathetic bodily language. Through physical accumulation and offset, she expands the freedom of perception, positioning dance as an open act that generates new dialogues and possibilities with the audience within local contexts.
